Spain has obtained blue flag status for 621 beaches, 103 marinas and five tourist boats. Blue Flag beaches must meet a rigorous set of cleanliness, environmental, safety and accessibility criteria.

Fernando Valdés, Secretary of State for Tourism, said: “We can say loud and clear that we have the best and best prepared beaches.”

Valence

As in previous years, the Valencian Community has received the most Blue Flags for its beaches, with 139 winning the award.

In Alicante, La Albufereta, Postiguet, Saladar-Urbanova, Sant Joan and Tarbarca received blue flags.

A visitor to La Albufereta wrote on Tripadvisor: “Nice beach, not too crowded. The water was nice and warm.

Benidorm’s Poniente beach has unfortunately lost its blue flag, although officials have said they will complain about its rating.

However, Levante Beach and Mal Pas have been awarded blue flags for 2022, making Benidorm a fantastic destination for Brits this year.

Levante is one of the best known beaches in Europe with plenty of restaurants and bars for visitors to enjoy.

A visitor said: “Very clean beach. Golden sand with clean water. You can take a nice walk on the beach.

Costa del Sol

Unsurprisingly, Spain’s sunny Costa del Sol is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country.

In the popular resort town of Nerja, three beaches have been awarded Blue Flag status for 2022.

Burriana, Maro and Torrecilla were celebrated in Nerja while Boliches-Gaviotas, Carvajal, Castillo and Fuengirola Beach won the prize in Fuengirola.

A visitor to Burriana Beach wrote: “This place is almost perfect. The beach is probably almost half a mile long in a sheltered cove.

The Balearic Islands

Spain’s stunning Balearic Islands offer tourists incredible beaches and several have won awards this year.

In Mallorca’s capital, Palma, three beaches have been awarded Blue Flag status. These were Cala Estancia, Cala Major and Playa de Palma.

A visitor to Cala Mejor said: “This little beach had the cleanest water I’ve seen near Palma.”

Another said: “Very nice beach, very clean, good variety of shops and restaurants with good prices.”

The Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are one of the UK’s top destinations and offer glorious weather for much of the year.

In Tenerife, 12 hotspots have met the strict blue flag criteria for 2022. El Duque and Torviscas are two of the best beaches on the island.

A visitor to El Duque said: ‘It was such a beautiful beach. Children can swim safely in the sea and all the facilities you need are there.

A tourist who visited Torviscas said: “The sand of the sea is silky under your feet. The beach has very few pebbles.
