Lake Placid 2023 mascot contest launched

A competition to design the mascot for the Lake Placid 2023 World University Games has been launched by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Any resident of New York State 18 years of age or older, or any resident of the United States currently enrolled in a college or university in New York State, is eligible to enter the competition.

Submissions must be made by April 18, after which the public vote will take place April 21-30.

A mascot selection committee, which includes Ashley Walden, director of operations for Lake Placid 2023, will choose the winner from 10 finalists decided by public vote.

“Lake Placid has long been a global symbol of excellence in winter sports, and the World University Games will build on this legacy while showcasing the state’s investments in our winter sports facilities and by providing opportunities for local economic development, ”Cuomo said.

“This design competition will engage New Yorkers in a way that not only commemorates the 2023 Games, but also captures the steadfast spirit of this great state.”

I Love NY, the official tourism website for New York State, is hosting the competition.

Another member of the mascot selection committee is Andrew Weibrecht, Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014 super-G Olympic medalist from Lake Placid.

New York City University Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez and New York State University Chancellor James Malatras are also on the panel, as is Kelly Cummings, who chairs the State Olympic Regional Development Authority.

Lake Placid – host of the Winter Olympics in 1980 and 1932 – is due to host the World University Games from January 12 to 22, 2023.

It hosted a Winter Universiade in 1972, while the 1993 Summer Universiade was also held in New York State, in Buffalo.

The secretary general and director general of the International University Sports Federation, Eric Saintrond, said the mascot competition “represents an important step” in the preparation of the Games.

“The first mascot was launched at the 1981 Winter Universiade in Jaca, Spain and has since been the cornerstone of every event,” added Saintrond.

“The competition allows New Yorkers, regardless of their athletic participation, to get actively involved in the Games and showcase their state to the world.

“The countdown is on and we are already looking forward to the great creativity of all participants.”

It is expected that 2,500 student-athletes will compete at Lake Placid 2023.

Cuomo, who started the mascot contest, has faced several allegations of sexual misconduct in recent months and his administration’s reporting of deaths from COVID-19, particularly the underreporting of deaths in nursing homes. nurses, was another scandal to land at the feet of the governor.
