NAIROBI, Kenya, March 2 – ODM campaigner Prof. Makau Mutua has been appointed spokesperson for Raila Odinga’s presidential campaign secretariat.
The chairperson of the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has been appointed to lead Odinga’s campaign think tank following his appointment on Tuesday.
Mutua is a strong supporter of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga.
Odinga praised Mutua for joining the team to manage his campaign as he takes his fifth presidential stab in the August 9 presidential election.
A fierce critic of Vice President William Ruto, Mutua expressed confidence in Odinga’s ticket saying he faces no serious contender in the August 9 presidential election.
“We have to think not with our hearts but with our heads and we have to look at the stories of the candidates who come forward, I can tell you there is no competition. It’s not even close. If it was a football match, it would end at 50 minutes,” Mutua said in his speech at the Azimo la Umoja convention in December 2021.
Mutua has extensive experience in law having started his teaching career at the University of Dar es Salaam where he taught international business in 1983 and 1984.
He then taught at the State University of New York, the University of Deusto Bilbao, Spain, the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica, the Faculty of Law of the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, University of Iowa Law School and Harvard Law School.
In 2016, Che unsuccessfully applied to be Chief Justice after former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga resigned, but lost the bid to Chief Justice David Maraga.
