This summer, Playa Del Carmen and Tulum broke records, as they received 822,000 vacationers between the months of June through August, as reported by the Riviera Maya Hotel Association (AHRM). This figure is the highest since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, with 625,000 visitors during the same months in 2019. The growth of the two cities as tourist hotspots has also been signaled by the increase in l accommodation, with 6,821 new rooms. and suites built for tourists to relax.
The State Secretariat for Tourism also found that more than 44% of hotel and resort rooms are concentrated in the Riviera Maya region, highlighting how Tulum and Playa del Carmen have become huge tourist hotspots. over the past few months. This will only continue, with average occupancy rates of 65% in September, 70% in October and 80% in November.
In addition, the first eight months of the year recorded an average occupancy rate of 75.8%, well above the 2019 average. The months of March and August recorded the highest occupancy rates high, with more than 80% for each destination.
The AHRM oversees more than 140 accommodations throughout the region, reviewing each for their standards and dedication to tourist safety. This year, the group found that tourism in the entire Riviera Maya region has increased significantly over the past year: July ended with 80% occupancy, August reaching 76 %, greatly exceeding what was achieved three years ago at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Tourism experts believe that the growth of these two regions is due to excellent air connectivity and a recent increase in the promotion of the two cities. Primarily, Playa del Carmen International Airport is responsible for transporting hundreds of passengers daily to and from the United States, Canada and beyond. The fact that visitors can fly directly to Playa del Carmen without having to change at Cancun International Airport reduces travel time, with a much smoother journey overall.
While Tulum International Airport is not yet open, experts have suggested that it will be able to carry 4 million passengers per year when completed. This is expected to further increase tourist records, as passengers will be able to fly directly to Tulum from hundreds of destinations around the world.
In addition, the AHRM participated in many events this year to promote the excellence of the Riviera Maya, including Tulum and Playa del Carmen. By speaking at the International Tourism Fair in Spain and the Road Show in the United States and Canada, the Quintana Roo Tourism Board was able to reveal the beauty and splendor of these Mexican and Caribbean places to first-time tourists.
Tulum recently made headlines after four bodies were found in Tulum’s hotel zone last month. While the victims were not tourists, the fact that the bodies were found so close to a tourist area sent shockwaves through the Mexican media, dissuading tourists from booking their next winter vacation in the region.
Playa Del Carmen drew similar negative headlines after shootings and instances of violence occurred frequently over the summer months. In particular, tourists and locals were shocked after two people were injured after a shooting at a popular Fifth Avenue tourist bar.
However, these negative headlines have failed to deter tourists, as Playa del Carmen and Tulum are more popular this year than ever. With 22% more tourists this year than in 2019, it is clear that these destinations have truly made their mark in the world of Mexican-Caribbean travel.
