The Air Europa fleet in 2022

Before we take a look at Air Europa’s planes in its fleet in 2022, let’s first take a look at this Spanish airline and see how it came to be.

Based in Llucmajor, Mallorca, Spain, with its main operational hub at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), Air Europa was founded as Air España SA in 1986.

With its headquarters on the Balearic island of Mallorca, it will come as no surprise to learn that initially Air Europa started flying charters to the Spanish holiday destination using Boeing 737-300s and 757s. that holiday charter flights were its daily bread, Air Europa began to compete with national airline Iberia and its subsidiaries with regular domestic flights.

Air Europa joins the SkyTeam alliance

In 1991, its parent company ILG ran into financial difficulties and increased its operations, forcing Air Europa to sign a franchise agreement with Iberia, which has since been dissolved. Globalia Corporación Empresarial SA now owns the airline. In the late 1990s, the airline’s older 737s were replaced by newer 737-800s. On September 1, 2007, Air Europa joined the SkyTeam alliance, allowing it to share flights with companies such as Air France/KLM, Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico.

On November 4, 2019, the International Airlines Group (IAG), owner of Iberia and British Airways, announced that it was buying Air Europa for one billion euros. IAG was looking to make Madrid a central European hub for flights from South America, and the deal made sense with Air Europa’s South American presence. Once in Madrid, passengers could continue to other European destinations on Iberia, British Airways or IAG’s other Spanish airline, Vueling. At the time, Air Europa had a fleet of 66 aircraft and in 2018 made a profit of 100 million euros, suggesting to IAG that it could recoup its initial investment in four years.

This was all, of course, pre-COVID-19, and the pandemic-induced downturn has IAG executives rethinking whether this was a wise move. In January 2021, IAG canceled its original offer and said it was still willing to buy Air Europa for half the money it had previously offered. Air Europa did not accept the new conditions and today remains a private Spanish airline.
